A paper drill, sometimes referred to as a high-capacity hole punch, does exactly what it says. It is a machine that drills holes through a large stack of paper. Typically, they have a drilling capacity of between 30 – 50mm thick stacks, making them excellent for high volumes of paper punching.
Paper drills generally come in three different formats; a single spindle to drill 1 hole at a time, a twin head to drill 2 holes, or a four head to drill 4 holes simultaneously through the stack of paper. They come in either electric or hydraulic models, as well as being table top or floor standing.
Paper drills use a pressing-type action that spins a hollow drill bit through the stack. The rotating action of the drill bit helps to reduce the amount of friction needed, as well as produce an even and clean punch through the entire stack. Paper drilling is simple and can drive through huge amounts of paper in an instant. This is why a paper drill is a common piece of equipment to be found in print/reprographic departments, production facilities, paper manufacturing plants and even offices.
Some would say the paper drill is a dying market, as most copiers/print machines can now punch paper during the printing process. Despite them being functional, they tend to slow the process down. Therefore, there will always be a place for the paper drill as a standalone machine in the print/reprographics departments and organisations.
